Our Ministry Team

  • Dr. GREG LAWSON - Senior Pastor

Pastor Greg has been Pastor of Pleasant Union for a little over a year and we have been blessed to have him and his wife, Betty here! Pastor Greg is a member of the faculty of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC as a Professor of Christian Education.

He and Betty have 3 grown children, James Gregory Lawson II, John Taylor and Rebecca Grace.

  • Kayl Whitaker - Minister of Music

Kayl (Kyle) is a North Carolina native born and raised 30 minutes west of Winston-Salem in the little community of Courtney.  He grew up attending Courtney Baptist Church where he received his call to the music ministry during his senior year of high school. It was also during this time he developed a love for all things music; especially singing, both solo and choral.

As a 2009 Graduate of Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC, Kayl honed his musical talents and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Comprehensive & Church Music. He's also an alumni of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC graduating in 2014 with a Masters of Church Music in Vocal Performance.

Kayl has served at Pleasant Union for over 9 years and in that time, God has greatly grown our Music & Worship Ministry. It was also during his tenure here where God introduced him to his fiance, Leighanne, and they are currently in the process of planning their wedding. His passion and goal in ministry is to serve God in the advancement of His Kingdom, by leading and teaching His church to use and grow their musical gifts, to the best of their ability, in the service, devotion, and worship of Christ.

When he is not working on his church responsibilities, Kayl enjoys spending time with his bride-to-be, practicing graphic design, working with computers, and also, when time permits, dabbling in a bit of PC gaming.

  • Hunter Johnson - minister of youth

Hunter was born in Florence, SC but moved around a lot as a Navy kid. He has lived in numerous areas within South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Italy. Hunter loves all sports, but especially enjoys soccer and football, and played both sports while living in Europe, which enabled him to play with people from all over the world.

In December 2017, Hunter graduated from The Baptist College of Florida with a B.A. in Ministry with a concentration in Pastoral Ministry. Currently, Hunter is enrolled at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC and is working towards earning a Master of Divinity (M.Div) degree in the Advanced M.Div program.

Hunter met his wife, Allison in Tallahassee, FL through their church's college ministry, and got married in June 2015. Some of Hunter's favorite things to do are dating his wife, teaching from the Bible, playing and watching sports, playing games (whether it be cards, board games, or video games - yes, even Fortnite!), listening to music, and hanging out with students!

Hunter joined the staff at Pleasant Union as the Youth Pastor in February 2018, has a passion for discipleship, and enjoys helping brothers and sisters in Christ grow in their relationship with the Lord.
